Fiona Sutherland & Sue Scobie

Fiona Sutherland

Born in Scotland, Fiona Sutherland grew up in an artistic family and was influenced by her father David Sutherland, the legendary Beano artist for over 50 years. She graduated in Fine Art, specializing in Sculpture from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee Scotland. Her career in art has enabled her to live in many places including London working part-time at Madame Tussauds, Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Australia for 14 years where she has many public art pieces permanently located in Queensland and New South Wales. In 2008, she moved to Nelson, New Zealand, where she continues to create her sculptures from her home-based studio.

Sue Scobie

Sue Scobie first started working with ceramics part-time at Hornsby TAFE Northern Sydney in the early 1990s. At the same time she was studying full time for a Master of Science (Ecotoxicology) at the University of Technology, Sydney. After returning to New Zealand, she pursued a full-time science-based career until the lure of ceramics got the better of her. After four years working part-time and studying, Sue completed a Diploma in Ceramic Art from the School of Art at Otago Polytechnic in November 2009. Sue takes her inspiration from the colours, forms, sounds and textures of the land, sea and bush. Her work explores the tactile nature of unglazed surfaces and the subtlety of finishes which can be achieved without glaze. All of her work is hand-formed by pinching and coiling using combinations of porcelain and stoneware clays with the silky, translucent porcelain contrasting with the rough, gritty stoneware.

Rebekah Hall

The creative process for Rebekah is always a slow one, it is about taking time to connect with the natural world surrounding her, exploring this a little deeper but also listening to the emotional response that this observation and connection ignites within.

Inspiration comes from pattern, texture and colours found within the stunning landscape of the Marlborough Sounds.

Working with a select range of clays, Rebekah aims for her sculptural forms to be an elegant, simple, restrained nod to the original inspiration rather than a direct copy. She will often incorporate local clays and sand into the work giving her work and herself a sense of place.

More recently she has become intrigued by beauty found in decay, of both natural and manmade forms, by colours changing over time through weathering, by the disintegration of material returning to the earth, and shadows created by the skeleton left behind.

These works encourage viewers to get close and explore from different viewpoints, to connect with the artist in a shared story of place.

Rebekah Hall is a ceramic artist living and working at the top of the South Island New Zealand. Originally a Mental Health Nurse from the UK she moved to New Zealand with her family in 2005.

She initially undertook studies in Sculpture, Design and Life Drawing at Hungry Creek Art School in Puhoi, followed by a Level 6 Diploma in Ceramic Art at Auckland Studio Potters in 2013 via Otago Polytechnic

A move to Marlborough in 2016 saw her reconnect with her art practice, and she now works full time from The Kauri Tree Studio at her home in Picton.
