Explore the possibilities of ceramic as a body ornament while learning about clay pigmentation, marbling, ceramic handbuilding and basic jewellery techniques.
During this two-day workshop, you will be guided to create pigmented ceramics earrings, necklaces, brooches, pendants, and more.
On the first day, participants will learn about the principles of clay pigmentation, marbling and handbuilding. On day two, the focus will be on basic jewellery techniques and making ceramic elements into wearable items.
Pieces will be fired twice and sanded in between classes, so participants can complete their jewellery pieces, and take home ready-to-wear items.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own jewellery findings (rope, silver wire, leather cord, etc.), as well as a basic pottery tool kit (sponge, cutting wire, wooden knife, wooden shark fin rib, steel rib, needle tool and trimming tools), and other objects for specific textures.
Iza Lozano (Baja California,1991) is a Mexican ceramic artist currently based in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland.
She studied ceramics at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City where she lived and developed her practice until 2020 when she moved to Aotearoa / New Zealand.
Since then, Iza has completed artist-in-residence programs at Auckland Studio Potters and Driving Creek Pottery and is now working from MUD Studios, a shared ceramics space.
Archaeological objects from multiple cultural origins inspire Iza’s works. Using the potter’s wheel as her primary tool, and terracotta or stoneware clay as her medium, she creates contrasting volumes as segments that are later assembled to constitute intricate shapes, often burnished with the help of rocks, spoons, and/or blades, leaving a smooth surface, naked clay, and the trace of an orbital motion.
Her work has been exhibited in Mexico, Spain, and Aotearoa.
